Phonological Therapy in Portland, OR

What is Phonological Disorder?

Phonological disorders are a type of speech sound disorder that involve patterns in speech that are atypical, inconsistent or not following the expected pattern of phonological development. Often without a known cause, phonological disorders often involve predictable errors on more than one sound. Certain phonological processes are considered typical until a certain age.

Parkwood clinicians can help identify which processes are considered age-appropriate and which warrant intervention to improve communication and age-appropriate articulation skills.

Treatment can either focus on production of one speech sound at a time, or more broadly target a number of sounds that are produced in similar areas of the mouth to maximize outcomes. Our treatment plans are customized to each child to build confidence and use their areas of interest to increase motivation and carry-over to other speaking environments.
